Proposition 36

This initiative required that adults convicted of non-violent drug possession offenses receive probation and drug treatment instead of incarceration for their first and second offenses. The measure prohibited judges from sentencing these offenders to jail or prison unless they violated probation or were convicted of additional non-drug crimes.
